Mystery Quilt Workshops

Gumnut Gear provides Mystery Quilt workshops, where quilters complete all stages of a quilt without knowing how the finished item will look. Arrive to find your fabrics ready to go and by following the step by step instruction you will end up with a lovely surprise. Morning, afternoon tea and lunch supplied.

In the second half of 2010, we have TWO exciting Mystery Quilt Weekends.

In addition to these dates, Therese can organise other weekends for group bookings.

Session 5 - Session 6 - Session 7
Session 8 - Session 9 - Session 10 - The End

This is a simple quilt using larger pieces for a quick result with a spectacular look. It is a mystery quilt, so simply follow each set of instructions step by step and it won’t be long before all is revealed.

Finished size:- 210cm x 150cm (84” x 60”)

Requirements:-
There are 6 fabrics used in this quilt, 1, main feature fabric and 5, contrast fabrics. Pick your main fabric and use that and draw out the colours for the contrasts. All the fabrics need to go together with enough contrast not to blend into each other.

2mt feature fabric:– this will be the main fabric in your quilt, it is larger pieces so it can be a large print – roses, boats what ever!

1.5mt contrast 1:- this needs to be a fabric you are happy to have with the main - tone on tone, small prints etc, Not a stripe.

80cm each of contrasts 2, 3, 4 and 5:- Choose from the colours within your main and be happy with the 4 together.

  • Mystery Quilt 4 was originally released in monthly installments, but is now freely available to follow at your leisure. Simply download each session as you are ready.

    Session 1 - Session 2 - Session 3 - Session 4
    Session 5 - Session 6 - Session 7 - The End

For this quilt, I have designed it with a patchworker's stash in mind. You need a large background piece, but the rest is done scrappy. So long as your piece is larger than 4cm square you can use it somewhere. I have broken the instructions up into sessions and parts, simply follow 1 step at a time.

    Finished size:- 170cm square
    Seam allowance:- 6mm

I recommend that all fabrics should be washed and pressed before starting. Also, you should read through all instructions for the section before starting work on that section.

    Requirements:-

    • 3.8 metres main fabric/background.
This needs to be a simple fabric, plain, marbled or with a small simple print as it must contrast your other fabrics.
    • 10 - 12 fat ¼'s or a large stash for contrasts - checks, stripes or any pattern will be fine as long as there is contrast from the background.
